J orchestra solo
Here is J playing a solo at his orchestra concert last week. He learned this a few months ago and hadn't practiced it since. I was glad that all of the soloists made a fair amount of mistakes, not just him. Way to be brave, Jayke!
Flying Butterflies
Jayke had an orchestra assignment to create and play a song. This is what he came up with.
He has come a long way since he started playing the violin. He started orchestra at a public school in October. He only had 1 1/2 semesters of "formal" orchestra class and was put in a class with students having 4 1/2 semesters. His orchestra teacher said he was just as good as all the rest of the students. I attribute his success to the strong foundation he received from my wonderful friend, Kristin Jansen. Combine his love of music with his love of performing/lack of stage fright and I am sure he will do great things with his talent! I sure love this boy!

A Most Memorable Holiday Weekend
After having been cooped in the house all summer and having had sickness in our house for over 2 months straight, we decided a weekend away from home was in order. With Labor Day right around the corner, we decided it was the perfect opportunity to get a breath of fresh air.
Aimee went to bed Thursday night with the startings of a fever. I had brought her to the doctor on Friday and she was diagnosed with bronchitis and given a prescription for antibiotics. This was just the beginning of the excitement our weekend would hold.
Ryan ended up getting out of school a little early on Friday, so we were on the road by 3:30pm. A few miles down the road we get a text from Jayke's scout leader saying that the road was completely closed due to a rollover accident. By the time we were a few miles from Sunflower/Slate Creek Hill, we saw the DPS officer slowing traffic down and then we were at a sudden stop. Knowing the situation, we parked the car in the road and started to make ourselves comfortable. After a while, V needed to get out and stretch so I took her outside to walk around. I had been walking with her a few minutes when I heard someone call my name. I looked around and saw a woman looking at me, so I went to go see who it was that knew me. Surprisingly, it was the family that delivers us free wood mulch for our yard/garden. We had a good time chatting while we were waiting for the accident to be cleaned up. Overall, we were stuck there for less than 2 hours, which was not too bad considering the severity of the accident and the volume of traffic on the roads.
When we started driving again, we had a little incident when Aimee told us she didn't want to throw up. We quickly passed some bags to her and then she began to empty her stomach into them. She repeated this one other time at the campsite after having her antibiotic, making me think she might be allergic. Thankfully she isn't and we were able to successfully give her medicine to her.
We also had an issue with V doing her breath holding spell again. Jayke was helping her rub some hand sanitizer onto her hand and she became upset about it and started crying....and then the crying paused. I knew exactly what what happening, so I turned around and her mouth was a mottled blueish color. She was still conscious, but definitely not looking right. I yelled at her to stop, I yelled at Ryan to stop, and I jumped out of the car to snap her out of it. Thankfully, she took her breath when I opened her door.
When we got to Payson, we dropped Jayke off at his scout camp-out and headed on our way to our camp site. While we were stuck in traffic, we had made plans with my sister, Amber, to camp with her and her friends. We had a bit of trouble finding them, since we typically do dispersed camping rather than campground camping and we had no cell reception to call them for directions. We did not realize how the campground was set up, with all its side roads and loops, so the first time through we didn't even try down the road they were camping on. We did eventually find them and got camp set up by 8:30pm.
We fed the kids dinner and put them to bed. Ryan and I stayed up to watch the fire die down. The whole evening we listened to the neighboring campers' music. As the night progressed, the music became louder and louder. It finally quieted down around 2am. Ugh! The next morning we were awakened at 6:30 to someone's music blasting. Seriously?! Is this how people camp now? What ever happened to being in nature? One of my sister's friends is a DPS officer and he went over to their camp and may or may not have flashed a badge and told them to turn it off. Thankfully they complied and we were able to sleep a little longer.
Ryan ended up leaving to go pick Jayke up from his camp-out. He didn't know exactly what time they were going to be ready, so he headed out fairly early. He ended up not returning until mid afternoon.
I took the kids down to the lake, which was quite a mistake. The trail leading to the lake was steep and the lake on this end left much to be desired. We typically camp on the other side of the lake and really enjoy the trail going down the other side. There is actually a little meadow area on the other side and water shallow enough to play in. Now we know to not take kids to this side of the lake.
After we came back from the lake, I went on a little walk with the girls on a nearby trail. We found some fresh bear scat, which was very comforting, but really enjoyed being in nature where it was actually quiet. When we returned, the kids quickly made friends with all the other kids there and played all day. They built forts, explored the forest, played games, and all the other things kids do while camping. After Jayke joined in mid-afternoon, they spent the next couple hours playing capture the flag. The boys especially enjoyed having friends their age to play with. They really had a lot of fun!
My parents, my sister Deanna, and her husband Luiz surprised us by coming to visit us at camp. We spent the afternoon talking and enjoying each others' company. By the time dinner came around, the music blasting had started up again. All the neighboring campsites had more than doubled in size and were looking more like parking lots than camp sites. One group started having a birthday celebration. I was not ready for another sleepless, loud night, so we decided to ditch the campground and sleep at my parents' house. We packed up in record time and were at their house in a little over an hour. That night we enjoyed flushing toilets, running water, warm beds, and electricity (which made it much easier to give Aimee a breathing treatment).
We spent Sunday lounging around, catching up with family, and playing with cousins. It was a most enjoyable day.
We wanted to make sure we avoided the majority of the traffic on the way home so we decided to go home Sunday night. We meant to stay only until dinnertime, but we ended up staying until 10:30pm before heading home. It was the perfect time for wildlife to be out and near the roads. I have never seen so many deer on the roadside as I did on this trip. Thankfully none of them decided to jump in front of us. We did see a freshly hit elk on the road coming down the Rim. A little further down the road we saw a vehicle stopped and someone was inspecting the outside of their vehicle. After we went through Payson, we were behind someone with obvious impairment. Luckily for them, they ended up turning off the highway before the DPS officer I called could get to them.
Despite all of its challenges, we really loved the weekend. We loved the trees, the green, the cool (almost cold) temperatures. We loved just being away from the confines of our house. We loved seeing family again and especially talking with Deanna and Luiz, who are visiting from Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic). We really loved having a break from our crazy life. We are even more excited to do it all again soon on our ward camp-out.

Summer is almost over!
With the weather spoiling us last week, I decided it was time for us to finally venture out of the house for the first time in months. The evenings were actually below 100F! Don't get me wrong, it was still hot! It was, at least, manageable once the sun went down. We pulled out the roller blades and hockey sticks and headed to the park. Thankfully, the park wasn't very busy and we had the entire basketball court to ourselves.
The kids had so much fun. Even Kate, who took a hard fall and bruised her tailbone, enjoyed herself. There was a lot of complaining about tailbone pain for days afterwards, though. The kids can't wait to go back and do it again!
While the older kids were playing hockey, I took V around to the pond to see the ducks. With it being so late in the day, we didn't see very many of them. V still was enthralled by them! All she did was exclaim in her little grunting jabbers and point to all the different ducks as they swam by. She was a happy girl.
I tried to get her to sit down so she would be still enough for me to get her face in a picture and all I got was this. She just wanted to run and show me all the ducks in the water. She is such a cute kid. I can't believe how fast she is growing up!

First day of school
I was so (beyond) excited for school to start this year. We have the girls in a school full-time and the boys are home-schooled with 3 days a week in enrichment classes. This will be my last year homeschooling. There is no way in the world that I want to try to home-school next year with Ryan doing community rotations. Single parent and home-school? No thanks! I gave the boys a pretty heavy class load this year. One day they go until 4:30 and the other 2 days they go until 3:30. We still do 1-2 hours of home-school on the days they go to their enrichment classes. At least the boys like their classes and say they are learning a lot.
I couldn't get a picture with Ethan not squinting. I guess the morning sun reflection was a bit bright for his sensitive eyes. Also, notice his teeth. He had his braces taken off the day before he started school. His teeth look so shiny and white to me.
The girls love their school and their teachers. Kate even begs her teacher for more homework every day. She thinks it is funny that all the "public school kids" complain when they have homework. I think it is even funnier that she calls them public school kids, not realizing that she is one now, too. They are both making lots of friends and doing well in their classes.
Now it is just V and me at home during the day. It feels pretty weird, especially when I try to entertain her. She usually has so many people around that she doesn't want to be around me unless she is hungry. Now she just follows me around everywhere. I try to give her toys to play with and she grabs them and then follows me around with her toys. I really wish she would talk. It would probably make it a little easier to play with her if I knew what was going on inside her cute little head.
This picture just cracks me up. It was probably our 3rd or 4th try at it. The flash is too bright and she is trying to force her eyes to stay open. Immediately after taking the pictures she turns my phone around to see how it turned out.
Here she is enjoying the rain. We have actually had a few really nice rainy days this past week. She just loves playing in the water. She is a puddle jumper. Anytime she sees a puddle on the sidewalk, she pulls me over to it so she can walk through it. She just loves being wet!

Ethan's birthday
On his actual birthday, he got to go to Skateland with his best friend. We knew she was moving soon, but didn't know until that day that the moving truck was coming the day after his birthday. He tried to not act sad, but I could tell that he was really going to miss her. He asked me for probably 4 days after his birthday if he could call her. I tried to tell him that she probably wouldn't answer if they were driving to Tennessee, but he still tried anyway. Poor guy. He was beyond thrilled when he got his first email from her, though.
Having his best friend move across the country made me a little sad for when we move. I just had a small glimpse of what it would feel like for all of our friends when we just up and leave. It won't keep me from moving, it just made me a little sad. I think I will be crying a lot when we finally move, even if I am excited for the future and all the opportunities we will have.
Summer Vacay
Oh, we had such a lovely time getting away from the heat this summer. We spent the first half of our summer vacation in Prescott (actually Groom Creek). We went on plenty of afternoon drives and morning hikes. We got to explore a lot of the area that we had not had the chance to before. On one of our drives we saw a wild turkey and its babies, which were so cute! We also saw the most hilarious squirrel. It was laying on the edge of the road, all sprawled out. I actually thought it might have been dead, but as we got closer it stood up and scrambled off the road. When it stood up, we could see that its pouch was stuffed full. On our way back, we saw the same squirrel sitting all sprawled out exactly as before in the exact location, still with its pouch stuffed to the max. It was like an old man sitting on his couch, relaxing and trying to digest after a huge meal.
On our hike we went to a currently dry waterfall. The monsoons hadn't started, so the creek wasn't flowing yet. We took the chance to go digging at the bottom of the waterfall for some dirt. The boys are really into gold panning right now. (Thank you, Gold Rush.) Even if they didn't find any gold, they still had fun trying to dig it up.
Sorry about the next image. My phone automatically edited it for me and got rid of the original. J is climbing the dry waterfall to find dirt in the little crevices, hoping it has gold in it.
Jayke is really into the camera now. He takes pictures of everything! I thought he was pretty serious before, but I was wrong. Anytime he has any free time, he is either taking pictures or working with the images on the computer.
V once again loved being carried on my back.
There was a bit of complaining about the heat on the girls' part, but we got over that fairly quickly when they got to play on the rocks.
By the time we left Prescott, it started its daily evening rain. I am a little sad that we didn't have monsoons the entire time we were there, like we did last year, but I was so glad that it was a lot cooler than it was in Mesa.
For the second half of our vacation, we went to Snowflake for my family's reunion. We had most of the family there, but we did miss Deanna and Luiz, Kaitlin and Daron, and Dorothy. We were so close to having everyone there, but with a group this large, we are bound to miss someone.
Since the time we last went to my parent's house, they have put up a big swing set in the back yard. V was in love! She would have sat in the swing for hours if I (or her cousins) let her.
The kids had so much fun playing with cousins. Some of them had to be introduced to each other again since it had been so long since they had seen each other. It was a little comforting to know that even my kids had a hard time telling the difference between Andy and Jane. (Glad I'm not the only one.) Seriously, if Jane's mole was removed I would not be able to tell the difference between them. I still have a hard time remembering all of Michael's kids' names and how many there are. Does this make me a terrible sister? Probably. Maybe it just means that Michael needs to send us more pictures of his little munchkins so we can see them more often.
We took a few full-group photos. I am really surprised at how big the family is getting! I am even more surprised that we were able to get everyone facing the camera at the same time. Obviously not all smiles, but it was quite a feat to get all the littles facing the correct direction at the same time.
And here is the parent/children shot (minus Deanna). We definitely look related!
The weekend was enjoyable. It was really nice to have most of the family all in one place at the same time and be able to catch up with our lives. It is crazy that out of one family we could live in so many different places. I miss hanging out with my siblings already.

Slide
Yesterday V had a very late nap. She fell asleep on the way home from church at 4:30, which meant she was awake all.night.long! Ryan and I decided to spend the night dreaming on estately.com while we let her get her energy out. (BTW, we did find an awesome house with a hidden room off the master bedroom. Suddenly, a hidden room has now become a requirement in my future house. :-) Check it out. Pictures 20 and 21, though the rest of the house is nice, too. http://www.estately.com/listings/info/12316-461st-ave-se) Anyway...V was using me as a slide. She kept climbing up on my lap and then sliding down my nightgown. It was so funny, but so tiring. Since all the other kids were asleep and couldn't see the naughtiness of what we were about to do, we turned our couch into a slide for V. Not surprisingly, she loved it. This kid needs a slide at home!
Jayke's end-of-year violin performance
This post was written almost 2 months ago. Oops! Finally got the videos uploaded so I could actually post this.
The end of the school year has passed. Wow! I cannot believe it is already gone. It really seems as though Ryan just started his D2 year (second year of dental school). I have no idea where this last year went!
As a little end-of-year bragging, Jayke's violin/viola class had a little informal presentation for the parents. I am so proud of Jayke for how much he has learned in such a short amount of time. He began on the violin a little over a year ago, not even knowing how to properly hold his violin. Thanks to a dear, sweet friend of mine, he was able to have 1-on-1 lessons for a few months last spring before life happened and we couldn't fit it into our schedule anymore. I was thrilled when his school started offering a violin class this spring semester and we could easily just fit his class right into our schedule.
I only have a couple songs recorded. Silly me, I just sat there so proud that the class actually sounded decent (and no cringing moments like I was expecting), that I completely forgot to record the beginning songs until I looked over and saw another parent recording it. Oops! Oh, well. Here are the few songs that I actually got.
At the end of the school year, Jayke's teacher told him that his 1/2 size violin was officially too small for him. He looked so huge playing that tiny little violin! (It is getting more and more obvious that he is just growing like a weed now! He out-eats everyone at every meal, his feet are bigger than mine, he sleeps for hours on end, and is almost as tall as me.) Thanks to another wonderful friend, we have a full-size violin waiting for us in August. What would I do without such amazing friends in my life!?

E's cub scouts
This month for E's cub scout meeting they were making paper airplane launchers. E had a blast! He brought his own hammer and knew exactly how to use it without breaking his fingers. He even knew how he wanted to fold his airplane for proper "wind-breaking" qualities. He was pretty excited when he saw how far his plane flew. He was even more excited when he realized that his plane went farther than a dad's plane!
The only reason his plane stopped where it did was because it hit the wall. He came home a happy boy that night and couldn't stop bragging about his awesome plane-folding skills.
